Nevada Computer Science Endorsement Information

Nevada currently has two K=12 teaching endorsements related to computers. The
Introductory Computer Science
and
Advanced Computer Science
endorsements. The details of the legislation are below. These endorsements are subject to change. The State of Nevada Department of Education is the definitive source for the latest information on endorsements. UNLV does not provide state endorsements. UNLV provides courses that can be submitted the to state department of education for consideration in meeting legislated requirements.

Introductory Computer Science

(NRS 391.019)

To receive an endorsement to teach computer technology-based applications and computational thinking that includes issues relating to information technology, tools for productivity, communication and research, and computational thinking, a person must have a valid secondary license or a valid license to teach middle school or junior high school education, and must have completed nine semester hours of coursework consisting of:

Three semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers methods for teaching computer science;

CIT 651 at UNLV is designed to meet this requirement

Three semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers concepts in computer science;

[CIT 601, CIT 602, EDU 214E, and EDU 214S meet this requirement]

Three semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers methods for teaching computer applications which include, without limitation: (a) word processing and the use of spreadsheets; (b) communication and collaboration tools; (c) internet research tools; (d) internet safety; and (e) proper keyboarding techniques.

CIT 649 at UNLV is designed to meet this requirement

Advanced Computer Science. (NRS 385.080, 391.019)

To receive an endorsement to teach advanced computer science, a person must have a valid secondary license, and must:

Successfully complete twelve semester hours of coursework, consisting of:

Three semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers methods for teaching computer science;

Three semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers concepts in computer science;

[CIT 602, EDU 214E, and EDU 214S meet this requirement]

Six semester hours of coursework in a course of study that covers instruction concerning programming in computer languages

[CIT 653 and 647 at UNLV are designed to meet this requirement]

This endorsement can also be earned by submitting to the Department official documentation which indicates that you have passed, at the level of competency specified by the Commission, the “Praxis Computer Science Test” prepared and administered by the Educational Testing Service.
